Here's a list of our favorite hiking trails in the area. Ice Age Trail Just over 10 miles outside of Mount Horeb is access to the beautiful and fascinating Ice Age Trail (IAT). One of only 11 National Scenic Trails in the country, the IAT is a 1,000-mile trail that meanders across the state along a path carved by the retreat of glaciers thousands of years ago. more The trail is great for a run, a day hike, or even longer excursions. (Will you be a thousand-miler?) Camping is available along the way, or stop at one of the trail communities and take in some local culture along with a roof and a bed. Unlimited access to mature forests, prairies, lakes and rivers makes the IAT a top-notch hiking destination. Governor Dodge State Park A little farther out, but worth the drive, is the 5,000-acre Governor Dodge State Park. It has 40 miles of trails winding through both steep and flat terrain, two lakes, and a gorgeous waterfall. Campsites are available for large groups, backpackers, and even horseback riders. Military Ridge State Trail Along the southern edge of Governor Dodge State Park is part of the 40-mile Military Ridge State Trail, a former rail line trail that also follows an 1855 military route. The trail connects Dodgeville to Fitchburg, passing by Blue Mounds State Park and offering spectacular views of the area's hills and valleys, woodlands, wetlands, and prairies. Blue Mound State Park A more local gem is the 1,153-acre Blue Mound State Park. Situated atop the highest hill in the region, it offers more than 20 miles of hiking trails, scenic viewpoints and campgrounds. The trails offer various distances and terrains, making it a great destination for both beginning and novice hikers. Donald County Park Right here in Mount Horeb is the lovely Donald County Park, encompassing 781.5-acres of woodland, native prairie, a stream, pond and pine grove. It offers 8.2 miles of multi-use trails, 3.8 miles of which are for hikers only. Part of the park's beauty is the Eastern Bluebird population, which makes its nests, February through September, in bluebird houses dotted throughout the park. Before you go, remember to plan ahead. State parks may require admission stickers or camping reservations, and unexpected conditions, such as the weather, may affect trail access. Most importantly, be safe. Popular dishes with the locals include sesame chicken, Szechuan chicken, the seafood combo, Kung Pao chicken, and twice-cooked pork. For appetizers, try the crab rangoons and the egg rolls, which are both frequently ordered items. While the service is very friendly, the food preparation can be a little slower than you might expect for Chinese food. However, all meals are cooked fresh to order, which is why you may find yourself waiting a bit longer than usual. Driving through the roads of Wisconsin, you're likely to encounter a lot of quirky small towns. But few are as quirky as Mt. Horeb, WI: a unique place known as the "Troll Capital of the World". How did Mt Horeb, WI get this unique nickname, and is it worth a stop on your road trip? Unique Beginnings Troll mythology is rich in Scandinavia, and when Mt. Horeb was founded in 1849, it quickly became a hub for Norwegian immigration. By 1870, there were almost 60,000 people from Scandinavia living in the United States, and Mt. Horeb became one of the biggest hubs of Scandinavian life in the country. They brought with them mythology, architecture, food, and other unique traditions that helped to give many towns in the state a unique flair. more Song of Norway If you want a taste of Scandinavian culture in Mt. Horeb, the best place to start is to look into the Song of Norway musical. Centered around an operetta by Robert Wright and George Forrest, it was performed annually at the Cave of the Monarchs until the early 2000s. This was the most prominent way Mt Horeb celebrated their Norse heritage until the 1980s, when they changed direction and put themselves on the map. Trolls Everywhere As a way to celebrate their Scandinavian roots, the citizens of Mt Horeb have turned the crafting of troll figurines into their town's most significant export. Wherever you go in the town, you'll see these figures lining the streets. Usually portrayed as short human-like figures with tails and big noses, they are made from wood, porcelain, and anything else the town's craftsmen can put their stamp on. They've even given each of the troll figures in the town their own identity, usually themed to the kind of mischief they get up to. The Trollway One of the most iconic troll-related stories is the Three Billy-Goats Gruff, who had to outfox a troll living under a bridge. So when Wisconsin constructed a new bypass span in the 1980s that would have passed Mt. Horeb by, the town decided to rebrand their own road. The Trollway leads curious drivers directly into the center of town so they can explore local businesses. A Taste of Norway If you're curious to taste the favorite foods of Mt. Horeb in a unique environment, a trio of restaurants await. The Grumpy Troll, a popular casual restaurant and pizzeria, has many unique troll sculptures in its dining room and serves a classic American menu ideal for kids. Schubert's Restaurant is the best place to go for traditional European fare, including a hearty plate of Norwegian Meatballs. And for dessert, don't miss Sjolnid's Chocolate Shop, where you can pick from a wide range of confections and unique Norwegian desserts like Fruit Soup and crepe-like pancakes. The crossover segment is getting crowded, and every automaker has to come up with something unique if they want to stay competitive in this space. The Chevy Equinox has changed up some things: what have those changes done? more Nice Esthetics The new Equinox doesn't disappoint in comfort. The new Midnight Edition is available in the LT trim, and it marries a black exterior with glossy black wheels, interior trim, and a blacked-out emblem surrounded by darkened fog lights for a gorgeous new look. All the old paint colors are still available, and now you can also get it in Chocolate Metallic and Cayenne Orange Metallic, both of which give you a unique way to stand out, yet in an understated rather than flashy way. With any of the LT models, you can choose leather-trimmed seats. Comfortable, Functional Interior There are a lot of options here, and you can choose anything from sparse but functional to luxurious to suit your preference. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, as are keyless entry and ignition. Another standard we love is active noise cancelation, so you'll be able to enjoy your tunes or take a work call without a roar from the engine interfering. The infotainment system is easy to use and intuitive, and the higher-trim models offer you a bigger screen. There's a pleasing number of available apps, too. Turbocharged Economy This is an entry-level vehicle in the segment, so it's surprising to see a turbocharged, 1.5 liter, inline-four base engine capable of generating 203 lb-ft of torque and 170 HP. This power comes with a six-speed automatic transmission that gives you 26 mpg in the city and 31 on the highway with the front-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive gives you 25 mpg in the city and 30 on the highway, which isn't much of a sacrifice for the advantage of AWD. If you choose the next engine size step up, you'll get a 2.0-liter, turbo, inline-four engine capable of 252 HP and 260 lb-ft of torque. Few manufacturers in this segment even offer higher-output engine options, so this is a real plus for the Equinox. Plenty of Space Despite a compact wheelbase, this little workhorse can take the whole family and then some. The Equinox has a 37.4-foot turning radius, which is small for the size and makes it a breeze to maneuver. Yet somehow, there's also plenty of headroom and 39.9 inches of leg space in the back seat. You get 30 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, and when you put them down that goes up to 64 cubic feet. While this is slightly less than some others in this category, it's also more than you'd expect for the overall size of the vehicle. The 2020 Equinox comes in four trims--L, LS, LT, and Premier--and every trim comes with plenty of options to customize, but they all sport our four favorite features. Which one gets you most excited?
